oppressed by the jihadists and are forced to adhere to their strict rules and regulations.

Despite the oppression, Kidane's family tries to maintain a sense of normalcy in their lives. His daughter, Toya, secretly attends school, and Kidane and Satima share moments of laughter and love. However, their peaceful existence is shattered when Kidane accidentally kills a fisherman during an argument. This incident catches the attention of the jihadists, who are quick to administer their brutal justice.

As Kidane awaits his fate, the film explores the lives of the people living under the jihadist regime. Women are forced to wear veils and are barred from playing music or participating in activities that were once a part of their daily lives. The jihadists impose their strict interpretation of Islam on the people, suppressing their freedom and joy.

Director Abderrahmane Sissako masterfully delves into the effects of religious extremism and the universal struggle for personal freedom. Through the lens of Kidane's story, the film portrays the resilience and dignity of the people of Timbuktu as they navigate life under oppressive rule.

Timbuktu is a visually stunning and poignant film that provides an important perspective on the consequences of religious extremism. It is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the valiant fight for freedom and dignity.
