An old friend of Kurt Wallander, solicitor Sten Torstensson, visits him one day to tell him that his father has passed away close to Brösarp under peculiar circumstances. Kurt does not take his friend's worry seriously. Shortly after, the friend is found brutally murdered and Wallander realises too late that he was wrong. In the hunt for the killer Wallander finds a conspiracy of crimes that leads him to a company that handles transplantations of human organs. Behind the company he finds the image of a man. An elegant and self-confident man who writes his own rules. But who is he? Who gives himself the right to judge over other people? Whose morals decide what is right and wrong? A light plane crashes outside of Mossby strand, and a detonated armour-piercing shell is found in the wreckage. Kurt Wallander is called in to investigate. A few days later, two elderly sisters are killed in an explosion in a sewing supplies shop. Traces of an advanced explosive are found in the burnt-out shop, and evidence soon mounts to indicate that both events are tied to a showdown between two rival narcotics gangs. By chance, Wallander makes a strange discovery about one of the suspects, which leads him back to a traumatic experience from his early days on the force. The continued investigation becomes an intense, violent struggle with Wallander

Shortly after police discovers the murder of three friends, police inspector Wallander finds his friend and colleague Svedberg dead. At first believing that Svedberg killed himself, Wallander soon discovers links between Svedberg, the three friends and a fourth person, a young woman at a mental institution.

The plot revolves around an attempt to disable all the financial systems in the Western world by idealists who believe that it will change the world and correct its imbalances, notably the poverty in Africa.

A Kurt Wallander mystery told from the perspectives of police and criminal. A foreign teenage girl burns herself to death under inspector Wallander's eyes. Several homicides take place where the victim is not only killed but scalped. The victims don't seem to have any connection. The viewer will know quite early that the serial killer is a deranged adolescent boy, but what exactly is his motive?
