A Dangerous Method

A look at how the intense relationship between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud gives birth to psychoanalysis.

Details

In the movie A Dangerous Method, set in the early 20th century, Sabina Spielrein, a young woman suffering from hysteria, is admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Dr. Carl Jung takes her under his care, implementing Dr. Sigmund Freud's revolutionary talking cure method. As they delve into Spielrein's troubled past and her traumatic relationship with her violent father, it becomes clear that her psychological problems are deeply rooted.

Despite her struggles, Spielrein's intelligence shines through, and she aspires to become a doctor, eventually specializing in psychiatry. As Spielrein and Jung spend more time together, a forbidden romantic relationship blossoms between the two, complicating matters due to Jung being married.

Meanwhile, Freud, a pioneer in psychoanalysis, sees great potential in Jung and envisions him as his successor. The two develop a father-son dynamic, sharing their theories and ideas. However, a major disagreement emerges when Jung begins to challenge Freud's belief that psychoanalysis can only reveal the cause of psychological problems but cannot lead to a cure.

This fundamental difference of opinion between Jung and Freud causes a deep rift between them, straining their once-close relationship. As the movie unfolds, audiences witness the intertwining personal and professional lives of these influential figures in the field of psychology, exploring their conflicts, desires, and the impact of their work.
